It’s very similar to how easy Sonos makes setting up with their app. The Google Home app walks you through step-by-step how to connect the speaker to your wireless router and get it ready for streaming. You should know that WiFi is mandatory as there is no ethernet input if you want to connect it directly to a modem. You can manually boost or cut the Max’s bass and treble levels plus or minus 6dB, but Google says the Home Max’s audio performance will automatically improve over time. The speaker uses its onboard microphones to evaluate the environment it’s playing in and will tune itself accordingly. Once the devices are paired successfully, you can begin to play any song from your Apple Music app on your mobile phone and then it will start playing automatically on Google Home as expected.

Apple set out to create a speaker that actually had great sound and was simple to use, set up, and integrate with the company's other products, and the home pod speaker get all that very successfully. On the other hand, the Google Home Max benefits from the artificial intelligence of the Google Assistant to take the lead in this regard and make it integrate seamlessly into almost any home setup. Google Home Max review: This is the best-sounding smart speaker you can buy
It’s hard to recommend a smart speaker over a dedicated home audio setup or any other Bluetooth speakers, but the Google Home Max has weaved its way into my life in a way other products haven’t. I admit, I’m already in the group of people that use a Google Home, but that’s mainly for setting alarms, timers, and asking it questions while I cook. With the Google Home Max I still do all of those things, but all while listening to music or podcasts. That said, if you can get one for cheap somewhere it’s worth considering.

The mute switch doesn’t stop music playback, it just turns off the microphone so it isn’t always listening for the hotword. Speaking of which, I found that the microphones on the Google Home Max aren’t too good at picking up my voice when music was playing around 75% or above. I found myself borderline yelling “Okay Google” and sometimes, even then I would just have to walk over to it and physically lower the volume.
That’s been slowly getting better , but that’s not an issue at all with the Google Home Max. It only comes with one cable and that’s the power supply. Setting it up is as easy as plugging it in and opening up the Google Home app.

If you live in an area where you can’t link Apple Music to Google Home, you won’t be able to use Google Assistant to ask your Nest speaker to play a song from Apple Music. Unfortunately, that functionality is linked to countries where Apple authorizes the linking of Apple Music with Google Home. The Google Home Max is the leader when it comes to smart specs, thanks to the intelligence that the Google Assistant and all third-party support that Google allows. It has more flexibility than HomePod, suitable for a house that has not yet plunged into the world of Apple. And furthermore, it is possible to easily listen to multiple services, such as Spotify, Google Play Music and several others.
After a couple reboots, the mini will now play music on Apple Music (via me hitting the “play music” button on the google home app), but still won’t respond when I ask it to play my playlist. Says the exact same thing about being unable to do it on this device. I wish I could just airplay it from the Apple Music app even, but it’s not an option yet . If you don't have a YouTube Music Premium account, you'll get a station of songs inspired by the song, album, or artist you asked for. You can't get specific songs, or albums on demand, but you can ask for music based on genre, mood or activity, or for YouTube Music's curated playlists.
Install the Google Home app by navigating to g.co/home/setup on your Google Home supported mobile device. Make sure to connect your device to the same Wi-Fi network that you intend to use to set up your Google Home device. Open the Google Home app by tapping the app icon on your device. Then choose the Google Play Music premium account that you want to link to Google Home.
There is just one touch sensitive area on the side of the speaker that’s responsible for volume control or pausing/playing music, but that’s it. And because you can orient the speaker vertically or horizontally that touch-sensitive bit can either be on top or on the right side. One helpful feature is that a voice will tell you when you’ve accidentally turned the speaker turned upside-down if you’re moving it. There’s a touch-sensitive volume slider on the top of the speaker (the right-hand side when vertically oriented), along with touch-sensitive play/pause. There are no physical controls for track forward/track back, but you can, of course, accomplish that with voice commands. The speaker is remarkably adept at hearing the “Hey Google” wake word even when it’s playing music loudly.
